Ken Goldberg
(b.1961, Ibadan, Nigeria)
Artist, scientist, researcher. Graduated in 1990 with a PhD from the School of Computer Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Goldberg is Vice President of Technical Activities, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (TARAS). He is a recognized expert in robotics and automation. Goldberg’s award-winning art installations have been exhibited at several international festivals and museums including Ars Electronica Center (Linz, 1995-2004), SIGGRAPH (1991-1995), V2 Dutch Arts Festival (Rotterdam), ICC Biennale (Tokyo), the Kwangju Biennial (Kwangju), the Venice Biennale (Venice), the Buenos Aires Biennial (Buenos Aires), the Pompidou Center (Paris), ZKM (Karlsruhe), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation (San Jose) and the Museum of Science and Industry (Manchester). He is the author of over 150 articles regarding robotics and aesthetic interpretation of new technologies and editor of several books, including The Robot in the Garden: Telerobotics and Telepistemology in the Age of the Internet (MIT Press, 2000). Goldberg is Founding Director of Berkeley's Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium and has held visiting positions at San Francisco Art Institute, MIT Media Lab and Pasadena Art Center. He has won numerous prizes and awards, including the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award (1994), the Joseph Engelberger Robotics Award (2000) and the IEEE Major Educational Innovation Award (2001). He holds six registered US patents on robotics, automation, and geometric algorithms. Goldberg is currently Director of the Berkeley Center for New Media and is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of California (Berkeley, CA, USA).
